SMSCom - Papers December 2008—May 2010

The SMScom project is funded as an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (Grant Agreement n. 227977—SMSCOM). The project started on 1 December 2008 and will last for 5 years. The papers collected here represent the body of research that has been developed in the project over the initial 18 months of activity. All the papers collected here have been published or are in the publishing process. All of them thus went through rigorous and very selective review processes.

The breadth and the depth of the research represented by this collection of papers, the quantity and quality of the contributions are a clear indication of the scientific fervor that SMScom was able to invigorate. It is a truly remarkable achievement, considering that it reflects the status of the project after only 18 months since it started. The project has been able to amplify and sustain collaborations among researchers and has provided the nurturing environment for a new generation of young researchers (PhD students, post-docs, and other collaborators).

The project focuses on pervasive software that lives in a continuously changing world and in different, often unexpected, situations. The software must be able to respond to changes dependably and in a self-managed manner. All aspects of software development and operation are revisited to support these goals. The project focuses on all of them from a software engineering standpoint, stressing both rigorous methodological approaches and the development of tools and case studies, which aim at validating the methods.
Although many issues are deeply intertwined, this volume classifies the contributions into the following areas:

  • Modeling and verification for adaptive systems
  • Composition and change
  • Middleware, sensing and actuating environment
  • Monitoring, mining, and learning
